Sewing Classes

Tinker offers sewing classes to fit every skill level and schedule.

For absolute beginners who aren't sure they want to commit, we recommend the Learn To Sew - Introductory Course.  It's a short course that gives you enough information to explore on your own and decide if sewing is something you want to do. Or you could try a day or more of Drop-In Sewing for use of the studio and equipment plus all the help we can provide, supplies included.

We will offer children's sewing classes on a request basis, with a minimum class size of 2 and maximum of 6. If you'd like to put together a class of 2-6 kids from age 8-12 years, please email us at tinkertradespaces@gmail.com and we will try to arrange class days and times that work for your group and for our instructors.

And if you're ready to learn more about sewing, we offer regular classes at all levels, as well as project-centric classes. To register for a class or workshop, please call 519-896-4949 or send us an email.

Shopping for a pattern these days can be a lot like shopping for a breakfast cereal. There are so many varieties that the whole process can be a bit intimidating. Once you've decided, knowing what to do with your purchase isn't quite as simple as pouring a bowl of Fruit Loops. We'll cover the whole process from shopping to finishing touches, and we'll learn about how to read and follow patterns whether they are free tutorial instructions, print-shop or home-printed PDF's, or commercial patterns purchased at the fabric store.

This class is not intended for absolute beginners. Students should bring their own machines (ideally capable of straight and zig-zag stitches), and should be comfortable operating them. If you need to use one of our machines, please let us know when you register for the class, as there are a limited number of machines available. If you are unsure if your skill level is adequate for this class, please come by the studio prior to signing up, and we'll figure it out. 🙂

We won't be putting any alterations services out of business with this class (including our own!)...but we can give you the skills you need to keep those quick jobs from breaking your budget. In this class we'll teach you how to do the following with a professional finish:

  • Mend open seams and repair an existing hem
  • Replace buttons and mend frayed buttonholes
  • Hem pants, skirts, and sleeves
  • Hem and patch jeans

We'll also give you guidelines so that you'll know when something should be done by a professional.

If desired, bring in 2-3 items of your own which are needing hems or repairs. All necessary supplies for most repairs are included in the class price; however, since some repairs require special items or more time and/or skill, we cannot guarantee that your item will fit into the class curriculum.

Sewing Life Skills

Basic Sewing Skills Most Humans Need
Available as Class on Demand

$35 +HST ($39.55) per student
Minimum class size: 1
Maximum class size: 6

Most of us have had some sort of struggle that a tiny bit of sewing skills could solve or even prevent. This class is for people who want to tackle everyday and occasional challenges, things like

  • Sewing on (and re-attaching) buttons so they stay there
  • Repairing a hemline (pants, sleeves, etc.)
  • Mending and reinforcing seams
  • Mending holes in fabric

Many of these tasks require only a bit of hand sewing, but you'll also learn how to do some things faster and better by using one of our sewing machines. You'll even learn some ways to mend, repair, and create without ever sewing a stitch, as well as how to know when you need the help of a professional. And maybe best of all, it's just ONE class, and you get to keep your "Survival Kit" --a handy, easy to store sewing kit which includes all of the things you'll need to use the skills you've learned (well...except for a sewing machine, but you can always come back and use ours!).

All supplies and machine use for the class are included in this course, but if you have an item that needs one of the repairs mentioned above, you are welcome to bring it so we can determine whether it fits into the lesson plan.
